Sam is a partner in Galligan Johnston, having joined as an associate solicitor in May 2011.  He was appointed as Partner in April 2015.  Sam qualified as a solicitor in 2008, having apprenticed in a large commercial Dublin firm.  He then worked in a top-5 corporate and commercial department before working in-house, prior to joining Galligan Johnston.  Sam heads up Galligan Johnston’s litigation practice, specialising in professional negligence, examinerships and general litigation work.

He works with both Edward Johnston and James-Paul Galligan and has particular experience in the following areas:

– Shareholder matters (litigious and non-litigious)
– Share purchase and asset purchase agreements
– Commercial leases
– Professional indemnity litigation
– Advising on corporate insolvencies (including liquidation, examinerships and receiverships)
– Advising court-appointed liquidators
– Intellectual property disputes (including domain name and trademark registrations)
– Negotiation of settlements with banks
– Representing clients at hearings of the Rights Commissioner and the Private Residential Tenancies Board, as well as at hearings of District, Circuit and High Court cases

Notable transactions and cases with which Sam has been recently involved include:

– Advising a court-appointed liquidator on the liquidation of a company with approximately two thousand customers
– Advising a high profile business in Castlebar on a successful application for interim examinership (and subsequent confirmation of that appointment)
– Advising several companies on joint venture agreements, corporate reorganizations and mergers and acquisitions
– A successful conclusion of a debt collection claim against a high profile international online gambling business
– Advising a number of clients on commercial Landlord / Tenant disputes
– Advising a BES investment fund on regular investments in green technology companies
– Advising a client on a complex claim against eight parties (including a bank and former solicitors) involving forged signatures
– Advising a company on domain name and trade mark registration disputes
– Advising a client on the acquisition of a pharmacy (including property and business) from a receiver
– Establishment of an Industrial & Provident Society
– Appeals to the Supreme Court

Education & Professional Memberships:

Sam graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Civil Law degree in 2003 and obtained an LLM masters degree from Trinity College Dublin in 2004. He obtained a Diploma in Commercial Conveyancing in 2007 and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in February 2008. He is also a member of the following professional organisations: Law Society of IrelandUCD AlumniTCD Alumni and St. Andrew’s College Alumni.
